Dear parents and carers,

I hope you and your families are well.

I am writing to let you know that, following a trustwide risk assessment and careful consideration of the latest guidance, the school will be closed on Wednesday the 24th of June and Thursday the 25th of June due to the Met Office Red Extreme Heat Warning affecting our area.  The school will remain open for vulnerable students.

I appreciate that an unexpected school closure can be difficult for families and may cause inconvenience. Please be assured that this decision has not been taken lightly. The safety and wellbeing of our pupils and staff must remain our highest priority and we have carefully considered all available options before reaching this conclusion.

The forecast heatwave brings with it the likelihood of record-breaking June temperatures and very high humidity. The Met Office has said that the combination of heat and humidity is likely to be oppressive.

In preparation for the hot weather, we have already put a range of measures in place to help keep the school environment as safe and comfortable as possible, including:

- increasing ventilation

- using shaded and cooler spaces

- reducing physical activity

- relaxing uniform expectations

- increasing access to drinking water

- closely monitoring pupils who may be more vulnerable to heat-related illness

Despite these measures, the severity of the Red Warning and the sustained temperatures forecast mean that we do not believe it will be possible to  operate safely under normal school conditions on these two days.

Our historic school buildings tend to retain heat and there are limits to how effectively they can be cooled during periods of extreme weather.

We also explored alternatives, including a partial closure and an early finish. However, we concluded that these options could create additional safeguarding, supervision and transport challenges and may increase the risks associated with pupils travelling during the hottest part of the day.

We are aware that a number of other schools and trusts in the area are taking similar action in response to the Red Warning.

Students should ensure that they are using their scholars guides, also available on the website:  Scholar’s Guides - Queensbury Academy to revise for their assessments next week.

We will continue to monitor the situation closely and will keep you informed of any further developments. At present, we expect the school to reopen as normal on Friday the 26th of June 2026.
